Job Summary: The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor assists the Grounds Maintenance Manager in overseeing daily care and maintenance of zoo grounds. Job Duties/Responsibilities: include the following but others may be assigned. Prepare daily work schedules, assign tasks, supervise work process, and complete necessary reports.
- Maintain employee attendance records and prepare time sheets.
- Check Condition of plant material to identify maintenance needs.
- Coordinate crew activities with other Grounds Maintenance units and/or zoo departments.
- Train employees in correct work procedures and safety practices.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and tools, prepare purchase requisitions and supply requests.
- Water, fertilize and overseed turf areas.
- Apply pest control material to turf and other general landscape areas.
- Install a variety of plant materials.
- Operate a greenhouse production facility.
- Install new landscapes and renovate old landscaped areas.
- Use a variety of hand operated and power equipment to accomplish maintenance tasks.
- Properly maintain tools and equipment, facilitate equipment repairs, and make recommendations for equipment acquisitions.
- Act as a liaison with the visiting public by courteously answering questions and helping to enforce safety rules.
- Maintain safe conditions for zoo staff and visitors.
- Assist manager in evaluating personnel and make recommendations regarding staffing, wage personnel disciplinary meeting when necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor supervises a crew of 4 full-time employees and additional temporary/seasonal staff as needed, and is responsible for the daily direction, coordination, and evaluation of the grounds maintenance unit.
- Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and evaluating work; training employees; ordering/arranging necessary supplies and equipment; coordinating maintenance activities with other zoo departments; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor works closely with crews and participates in many crew activities.
- Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with established policies and applicable laws.
Job Qualifications:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and ability.
- Three years of experience in commercial turf maintenance and operation of commercial turf/landscape equipment. (i.e, spin trimmer, blower, edge, push mower, chainsaw, etc.), riding mowers and tractors.
- One year of experience applying pest control materials to turf and ornamentals.
- Two years of experience in crew supervision.
- Valid Class Texas Driver's License
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; walk; use hand to finger, handle, hold, or feel; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; reach with hands and arms; and use feet and legs to operate equipment.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to safely operate a variety of powered and hand-operated equipment, including a front-end loader tractor, commercial riding mower, and broadcast sprayer.
- Ability to accurately and effectively communicate instructions verbally and in written form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units off measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to calculate correct product application rates. Ability to calibrate sprayers and fertilizer spreaders.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, product labels and material safety data sheets.
- Ability to write routing reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of visitors or employees.
- Ability to speak Spanish helpful.

- The noise level usually varies from moderate to high.
