Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of the veterinary technicians, Animal Health keepers, hospital clerk, interns, and volunteers. The manager will fill in for support staff when needed. Tasks include setting up for procedures, assisting during procedures and cleaning and maintaining the hospital and equipment. The manager will also assist in cleaning and maintenance of quarantine animals and facilities, and sea turtle center when needed.
- Maintenance of hospital inventory and ordering of items for the Animal Health Department.
- Developing and implementing new standard operating procedures and editing previously established procedures as necessary.
- This may include amending various protocols such as quarantine entry or hospital daily task lists, but will also involve creation of new standard operating procedures as determined by the veterinarians,
- Oversee medical record entry and maintenance of excellent data entry practices.
- This task may include follow-up with outside laboratories and vendors to ensure ordered test results are received in a timely manner and entered into ZIMS accurately.
- Knowledge or prior experience with ZIMS is preferred.
- Provide guidance to hospital staff in maintenance of the hospital pens, quarantine facilities, sea turtle center, necropsy and veterinary hospital.
- Ensure that the Animal Health Department follows policies that are in accordance with AZA, USDA, and OSHA standards.
- Provides recommendations for purchases, repairs, and facilities operations for the zoo’s hospital, sea turtle and quarantine facility; ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
- Assists in the supervision and evaluation of staff, interns/externs and volunteers including work distribution, training, and problem resolution.
- Operate onsite incinerator as needed.
- Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates; assists with scheduling daily work routine of subordinate employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ideal candidates must have good observational skills, be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, be flexible, self-motivated and a team player, be able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees and zoo guests, and must be able to actively work in inclement weather.
Experience Required
- Bachelor s degree.
- Two years of experience in the management of zoological healthcare administration or veterinary medicine to include supervisory experience is required.
- Additional experience in in the management of zoological healthcare administration or veterinary medicine may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Must possess a Driver s license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a zoological park, veterinary office or related experience in a supervisory capacity is highly preferred.
- Because this position serves both as a hospital manager and may include the duties of a certified veterinary technician, veterinary technician certification is strongly preferred.
